WEST VIRGINIA ALL-STATE BAND AUDITION REQUIREMENTS 2008-2009

Deat WV Band Directors,

Please find attached the audition requirements for the 2008-2009
West Virginia All-State Band.

Make sure you read all of the information regarding the audition
process, index cards, fees, due dates, and penalties for late registration
carefully.
All deadlines are firm; please do not request extensions
or exceptions.
All registraion information must bepostmarked by the
due date in order to be considerd on time. To avoid any problems,
please submit all the required information ahead of the final due date.

As approved by the WV Bandmasters Association, the scales will be scored
separately, counting the same as the other categories in the audition. The
scale requirements have been standardized across the board, with the
chromatic scale ranges set by the judges. Sight-reading will be a part of the
audition process again this year, and auditions will be blind once again.

Our audition dates are January 9th, 2009 (Fairmont State Colege) and
January 10th, 2009 (Capital High School, Charleston).

AUDITIONING STUDENTS MUST BE AT LEAST A FRESHMAN AND BE A MEMBER OF A PERFORMING ENSEMBLE AT A WVSSAC MEMBER SCHOOL IN ORDER TO BE ELIIBLE TO AUDITION.

The audition fee is $10.00 per instrument per student. (Example: The fee for auditioning on both flute and piccolo is $20.00). Also, students auditioning on more than one instrument need to submit a SEPARATE index card for each instrument. (Example: one card for flute and a separate card for piccolo).

The audition fees and registration cards must be postmarked by November
7, 2008 in order to be considered on time. After that date, the registration
fee will rise from $10.00 to $15.00 per instrument per student. Absolutely no
registrations or fees will be accepted if they are postmarked later than
November 14, 2008. Students who have not pre-registered will not be
permitted to audition. Audition dates are January 9th, 2009 (Fairmont State College) and January 10th, 2009 (Capital High School, Charleston).

Auditions will not be cancelled due to bad weather. If you are unable to make
your requested site because of weather conditions, you can be worked into
the next days' schedule as cancellations occur. If students are registered at Fairmont, they will only be allowed to audition in Charleston due to weather conditions not schedule conflicts (don't ask).

Please enclose the following information on a 3X5 not 4X6 index card in the following manner. It is very important that you fill the card out correctly. Incorrect cards will be returned at your expense. Late cards will not be accepted.

         Students will be asked to demonstrate proper tuning techniques.
         Pitch pipe or tuning fork required.
         Students will not be allowed to use the mallet instruments to tune timpani.  
         Students will be asked to demonstrate proper playing techniques on
         tambourine, bass drum, and cymbals.
